Five Danish Medical Students on a Research Adventure in the USA

For the tenth consecutive year, the Lundbeck Foundation has awarded pre-graduate scholarships—also known as DARE fellowships—to Danish medical students. This international partnership offers students the opportunity to advance their careers in medical research and bio-entrepreneurship.

Dare fellows 2024

Five talented medical students will spend the next ten months conducting research alongside some of the world’s leading scientists at Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Their research projects cover a wide range of topics, including epilepsy, osteoporosis, lymphatic dysfunction, the connection between skin and cardiovascular diseases, and rectal cancer.

To be considered for a DARE fellowship, one must be a medical student at a Danish university, have completed the bachelor's portion of their studies, and demonstrate exceptional talent. During their stay in the USA, it is also required that the student completes a research project resulting in at least one publication in an international journal.

DARE stands for Danish American Research Exchange, and the  program provides Danish medical students with the opportunity to spend ten months in the San Francisco Bay Area, where they receive practical training in clinical research. They receive close mentorship from internationally recognized clinical researchers at some of the top universities in the USA. The program is managed by Innovation Centre Denmark in Silicon Valley with support from the Lundbeck Foundation.
