Translational chemogenetics in models of parkinsonian movement disorders

It is now generally recognized that idiopathic Parkinson Disease (PD) is a multi-system neurological disorder and the presentation at the time of diagnosis represents an advanced phase of the disease. Moreover, the symptoms suggest neuronal dysfunction in the brainstem.
This study represents a critical advancement in model development with the evidence that PD-like cellular pathology due to alpha-synuclein aggregation in the brain stem recapitulate features of PD motor symptomatology. Extending the proof-of-concept efforts, we aim to harness translational approaches in neuronal circuits biology for animal model refinement potentially facilitating novel interventions for ameliorating motor disability in PD and related diseases.
