Targeted degradation of aberrant protein condensates

Associate Professor
Aarhus University

Recently, it has been discovered that several neurodegenerative disorders are linked to the stickiness of proteins that lead them to assemble into balls – condensates - a bit like sticky spaghetti coming together in a spaghetti carbonara. This new potential disease mechanism suggests that we need to develop new types of pharmaceuticals to interfere with this self-assembly. We are especially interested in finding molecules that allow us to remove the wrong condensates while leaving the healthy ones alone. We will take advantage of recent advances in artificial intelligence within the field of protein design. These algorithms allow us to design new proteins that we hope to tailor to clear such erroneous condensates.
