SocMenDis: Socioeconomic Context and Mental Disorders: quantifying the impact

Postdoc
Aarhus University

Linda Ejlskov, Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Aarhus University, has received a Lundbeck Foundation Postdoc grant worth DKK 2,305,540.

About the project

One in three individuals experience a mental disorder over the course of their life with those of lower socioeconomic position (SEP) being disproportionately affected. However, existing studies often (I) do not fully account for familial psychiatric intergenerational transmission, (II) focus on single markers of SEP, and (III), report relative risks, which are difficult to translate into practice. These limitations prevent us from understanding and developing population-based policies aimed at reducing the societal burden of mental disorders.

SocMenDis will leverage the unique Danish registers to establish the Danish Socioeconomic Mental Disorder cohort; a prospective register-based cohort of all children born in Denmark from 1980 onwards. This cohort will include longitudinal family and individual data on psychiatric disorders, health, family function/dysfunction, and socioeconomic context.

SocMenDis will use innovative methods to estimate the contribution of SEP to the development of mental disorders considering underlying familial psychiatric susceptibility and advance the literature for understanding the contribution of SEP on mental disorders using a life course perspective. In accomplishing SocMenDis’ objectives, It will provide a more holistic view of the excess mental health burden associated with growing up in a disadvantaged socioeconomic context. Such knowledge is essential to guide policies aiming at reducing the risk of mental disorders.
