Photonic neural probe based on integrated optical phased array

The brain activity can be manipulated for brain study and treatment by probing light beam into neural cells. This project is aimed to develop a new type of neural probe using integrated 'photonics chip' known as optical phased array (OPA). Compared to traditional probes, the OPA is significantly more compact and enables much faster light beam scanning without relying on mechanical components. Additionally, our proposed OPA generates a specialized beam called Bessel beam, which, unlike traditional beams used in probes, can penetrate deeper into tissues and self-recover after encountering opaque structures. These features make it ideal for manipulating neuron activity in deep brain regions.
