Implementation of point-of-care ultrasonography in general practice
Camilla Aakjær Andersen, Centre for General Practice at Aalborg University, has received a Lundbeck Foundation Early-Career Clinician Scientist grant worth DKK 2,107,050.
About the project
Ultrasound machines have become better, smaller, and cheaper and can be used by the general practioner to look inside the patient in the clinic office or even in the patient’s home. Improving the general practitioners’ examination capabilities may expedite that patients receive the right diagnosis, treatment, and referral. However, the technique is very user dependent and requires proper training and quality assurance.
Camilla Aakjær Andersen will lead a national implementation program to develop and test an educational intervention that can be offered to general practitioners. The project will assess to what extent the general practitioners continue to use the technology, how the use of ultrasonography by the general practioner affects referrals to hospitals and specialists, as well as how it is perceived by patients and the general practitioners. In addition, a health economical evaluation is planned.
